“Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success.” –Henry Ford

It is a great privilege to be elected as the President of the Neurosurgeons association of Sri Lanka. It is the only one of its kind to this country and represents all Neurosurgeons part of the Ministry of Health and the College of Surgeons of Sri lanka.

The first Neurosurgery unit in Sri Lanka was established in 1956, by the late Dr. Shelton Cabraal, and ever since Neurosurgery has grown as a sub-speciality, now boasting of 8 public neurosurgical centres in 8 of the 9 provinces, with 3 private centres based in Colombo. The 15 public sector Neurosurgeons are worthy of mention, for their overwhelming hard work in dealing with the workload of a population of 21 million.

In a developing country with a significant burden from road traffic accidents and trauma, each of these centres play a vital role in the management of emergencies in addition to elective cases.

The main aim of the Association is to aid in the progressive development of these Neurosurgical centres through equipment provision with the help of the Ministry of Health and through the training of the next generation of neurosurgeons, medical officers and all other allied health care professionals.

The main event on our agenda for the upcoming year is the first International Neurosurgical Conference in Sri Lanka on Neuro-oncology management – Wilkins-Barrick SNO International Outreach Course held from the 20th – 22nd of January 2017.  We are looking forward to invite local and international dignitaries from the United States of America, Canada and the United Kingdom.

Behind the scenes ensuring the smooth functioning of the society and its events is the Secretary for the Society Dr. Nirukshan Jayaweera, the course coordinator Dr. Ruvini Abeygunaratne and the rest of the team who should be duly acknowledged.

Wishing everyone a successful year ahead,

Thanking you

 Dr. Saman Wadanamby
